Italy is one of the
world's leading football nations.
The Italian national football
team, called "Azzurri"
for their blue shirts, are one of the most winning
National teams, having won the World Cup four times,
and 27 major European trophies.
Football was first
introduced to northern Italy in the late 19th
century by mainly Swiss and English expatriates .
The first matches were played in Genoa, Milan and
Turin. One of the first clubs to be exclusively
dedicated to this new sport was Internazionale
Torino in Turin.
