Basic Italian conversation

'Tu' and 'ti' used for second person singular, is the informal friendly form. To people you don't know very well and elders, you should usually use the third person singular form 'lei'. Here, the examples are all in the informal form.

Do you like Italy? Ti piace Italia?

Yes I like Italy  Si mi piace Italia

Italy is beautiful  Italia e` bella

What job do you do? Che lavoro fai?

I work as a teacher   Lavoro come insegnante

I work in a shop        Lavoro in un negozio

I'm a student     Sono studente/studentessa

I don't work       Non lavoro

Do you have brothers or sisters?  Hai frattelli?

I have one brother and two sisters Ho un frattello e due sorrelle

Are you married? Sei sposato/a?

Yes, I'm married  Si sono sposata/o


How to say the time in Italian

What time is it?   Che ore sono? or Che ora e`?

It's six o clock (in the morning) Sono le sei (di mattina)

It's six o clock (in the evening)  Sono le sei (di sera)

Twenty minutes to (the hour)  (the hour) meno venti

Quarter to (the hour)      (the hour) meno un quarto

Five to  (the hour)          (the hour) meno cinque

Half past (the hour)     (the hour) e mezzo

For 'mezzogiorno', 'mezzanotte' and 'l'una'- use E`+ (e.g. e` mezzogiorno)

For anything else - use Sono le + (e.g. sono le sei)

It's midday        E` mezzogiorno

It's midnight     E` mezzanotte          

It's quarter to nine Sono le nove meno un quarto  

It's quarter past seven Sono le sette e un quarto

It's half past seven Sono le sette e mezzo

It's 1.20 pm  E` l'una e venti

It's twenty to eight Sono le otto meno venti
